History
The Shepherds' Field Chapel in Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem, commemorates the angelic announcement of Jesus' birth to shepherds. Built in 1953 by the Franciscans, it stands on a site with ancient caves, Byzantine monastery remains (4th–6th century), and evidence of Roman-era habitation. Designed by Antonio Barluzzi, the chapel mimics a nomadic tent and features inscriptions of the angel's words and imagery of Jesus' birth. Nearby is the Greek Orthodox Der El Rawat Chapel, marking the same biblical event.
